Fiat-Chrysler’s smallest SUV came as an all-new in 2014, so don’t expect anything new for the 2017 Jeep Renegade. Well, there might be some small changes and improvements, but nothing substantively important.
The mini SUV is still a pretty fresh option, so it really doesn’t need any additional modifications, at least not inside and out. Okay, the car manufacturer should reconsider certain drivetrain improvements, but this will likely happen in a year or two.
However, if you need the SUV with a subcompact footprint, the 2017 Renegade may be the best choice, because it combines pretty great off-road abilities, the very latest safety features, and really catchy look. Above everything, the carmaker won’t “steal” you too much, money because the SUV starts below $18,000.
2017 Jeep Renegade: Drivetrain Options
In the powertrain department, the 2017 Jeep Renegade will definitely keep its base turbocharged 1.4-liter engine and will also offer an optional 2.4-liter inline-4. The 1.4-liter mill will continue to deliver 160 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque. If this is not enough for you, the bigger 2.4-liter option produces around 180 HP and 175 pound-feet of torque.
Except for the higher output, these two drivetrains are different because of transmissions too. The smaller unit is paired with a 6-speed manual gearbox, while the more powerful engine uses a nine-speed automatic transmission only. Of course, both options are offered with a standard front-wheel drive and optional all-wheel drive.
However, if you don’t plan any adventurous ride, we strongly suggest the FWD model, because it costs $2,000 than the AWD version. On the other hand, off-roading seems impossible without a proper kit, which includes all four wheels and some really superb settings for Mud, Sand, and Snow drive options. The Renegade becomes an even more capable SUV if you choose the range-topping Trailhawk trim that features Rock mode too.
This ultra-small SUV sports rather good towing ability, at least this is the case with the 4WD 2.4-liter model, which is able to tow around 2,000 pounds.
Renegade’s fuel economy numbers are not the best in the class, but they are also not the worst. The SUV is rather average, so the stronger 2.4-liter engine delivers 22/31/25 mpg with front-wheel drive and 21/29/24 mpg with AWD. On the other hand, the small 1.4-liter option is rated at 24/31/27 city/highway/combined, which stands for both, the FWD and AWD models.
Design And Features
The exterior styling is a matter of taste, but we love this tiny SUV. It has that pretty mean look, which says: “Hey dude, let’s do some off-roading. I’m bored on the road, so we can get into the mud for some fun?!”
Of course, the 2017 Jeep Renegade possesses the right equipment for all-terrain adventure, so it’s not just the handsome subcompact without proper functions. Anyway, in contrast to the bigger Compass that largely resembles the Grand Cherokee, the 2017 Renegade has its’ own look. Yes, you may find some similarities with the Wrangler, but essentially the small SUV looks rather unique.
The front end features an impressive seven-bar grille and round headlights, yet the pronounced wheel arches make the impression of toughness. Around the back, you won’t find anything unusual, except for the interesting taillamps that feature “X”-styling.
As for the interior, well, we must mention that oversized controls. It’s everything OK, but the car seems like it borrowed all the equipment from some full-sizer. Except for this small remark, the SUV sports really great cab styling and pretty respectable equipment for this segment.
The base 2017 Jeep Renegade offers a height-adjustable driver seat, 60/40-split folding rear seats, and tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, which you won’t find in the regular 2017 Compass model. There is also keyless entry, power windows, a four-speaker sound system, USB ports, and 16-inch wheels made from steel.
In case you are not satisfied, there is the Latitude trim that includes some additional equipment like heated and power-adjustable mirrors, LED lights, cruise control, alloy wheels, satellite radio, a touchscreen Unconnect interface, rearview cam, as well as two more speakers and voice commands.
At the end of the road, you will find the amazing Limited model which features just everything. Except for all of the above, the 2017 Renegade Limited “drives” 18-inch alloys, automatic dual-zone climate, eight-way power-adjustable driver seat, heated seats and steering wheel, leather upholstery, automatic wipers, and remote engine start. Are you impressed with it? Well, you gotta be, because it has quite an impressive kit.
The 2017 Renegade SUV features pretty solid safety, which is rated with four stars. There is impressive standard safety equipment, which includes traction and stability controls, as well as antilock brakes and quite a useful hill start to assist.
Also, the vehicle comes with plenty of airbags that cover the front, side, and knee space, while the high-performance trim level sports a rearview camera, a blind spot monitoring system, lane-keeping assist, a rear cross-path alert system, a lane departure warning system, collision warning system, and rear parking sensors.
This truly capable and off-road-oriented mini SUV isn’t too expensive of an option. Moreover, the base 2017 Jeep Renegade starts at $18,000, but the Limited option could cost over $27,000.
