The new-generation Jeep Wrangler is so close to its release, so we can feel the intolerable tension in the air. Moreover, there is an incredible amount of information and details about the upcoming off-road SUV, which makes us believe that the manufacturer won’t have anything to surprise the audience at the official debut.
Speaking of the arrival, the car manufacturer plans to present the 2018 Jeep Wrangler late this year, so we think it will come at the upcoming 2016 Los Angeles Auto Show in November. If not, then look for the new-gen Wrangler at the next NAIAS in January.
2018 Jeep Wrangler: Changes And Improvements
By looking at the spy photos we can conclude that there are no too many changes on the iconic SUV, but when we scratch below the surface, we see plenty of changes. The most important differences will happen under the hood without any doubt.
In contrast to the current model that uses just one engine, the new generation Jeep Wrangler will have several options. From our point of view, this quite radical turning point is not just a coincidence, but the answer to the upcoming competition, which is becoming stronger and stronger.
After all, Ford already announced the arrival of the new generation Bronco, while Toyota is working on the next 4Runner, so it’s pretty clear that the 2018 Jeep Wrangler must be unsurpassed and impressive.
There’s not so much reliable information regarding the new chassis, but we know some detail. The platform will continue to be traditional, but no matter it will stay ladder-frame and with solid axles, the SUV will become radically lighter.
The vehicle will definitely add more aluminum, which will improve both, the overall weight and rigidness. We can’t say whether the new-gen Wrangler SUV and Wrangler pickup are using the same underpinning, but all the logic says yes. Still, on the other hand, SUV’s short overhang indicates a different turn of events.
In any case, the platform is pretty adjustable, so the 2018 Wrangler will be able to receive a range of different engines. Jeep’s bestselling nameplate will offer two gasoline and one diesel option, while the rumors indicate the arrival of the Wrangler hybrid too.
Next Wrangler Engines And Transmission
The base option will stay the outstanding 3.6-liter Pentastar engine. However, the unit will be updated, so it should deliver more power and better fuel economy. Except for the standard mill, the off-road SUV will also get an all-new and quite impressive 2.0-liter Hurricane engine.
Although we don’t have all the specifics about it, the information that the new turbo-4 delivers more than 300 horsepower sounds quite promising. As for the oil-burner Wrangler, we know it must be Ram’s 3.0-liter EcoDiesel, but we don’t know whether it will be boosted. If not, you can expect around 240 horsepower and 420 lb-ft of torque, which is more than enough for the impressive ride, towing, and efficiency.
Like we already said, the car manufacturer plans to introduce the hybrid powertrain as well. Still, we can say what to expect from it, because this option won’t be available right away. As we have heard, the hybrid won’t be offered for another three or four years.
A manual gearbox stays for sure, yet the carmaker will definitely bring in an all-new eight-speed automatic transmission developed by ZF. Of course, four-wheel drive will be unchanged.
Styling And Technology
Still, the greatest obscurity at the moment refers to the exterior and interior styling of the 2018 Jeep Wrangler. Yes, yes, we saw several partly revealed models, but these were the testing mules and not the actual prototypes. The latest totally camouflaged model indicates that there will a number of changes inside and out.
The overall bodywork is hidden beneath the camo, but we spot that the next Wrangler is getting a bit longer body totally new shape of the front end. The design is still pretty boxy, but the front-end styling is more dynamic and aggressive.
The front fascia is getting a redesigned grille and more pronounced bumper, while the headlights are the biggest mystery at the moment. We think that the carmaker won’t change the distinctive and rounded shape of the lights, but it will add some new tweaks, like new graphics and LEDs.
We haven’t seen the interior yet, but the latest reports announce some really encouraging details. Reportedly, the 2018 Wrangler will get more luxurious treatment inside with premium and soft-touch materials. The base model will sport the smaller 5.0 Uconnect system, while FCA’s 8.4-inch Uconnect infotainment stays as an option.
However, these systems will be nothing like the current setups, because the producer prepares some fantastic upgrades. Bluetooth, satellite radio, and navigation are just a small part of what we expect, so be ready for a number of useful apps inside.
The 2018 Jeep Wrangler will probably keep the current price, which is around $25,000. However, the range-topping model will easily jump over $40,000.
